A wrap is cut to sit on the shoulder rather than at the neck, and everything about it follows from that. Ours are handwoven to a uniform 180 by 60 centimetres in grade A cashmere and lambswool, handled through every stage in a 250-year-old heritage mill.
At that width the cloth carries its own weight across the back and stays square on the shoulder without fastening. Narrower and it slides; wider and it gathers. Every piece here is made to the same dimensions, so how one falls is a question of fibre rather than of cut.
Worn over the shoulders of a fur coat it is the most deliberate thing in the outfit. Over a tailored overcoat it does the opposite, adding a second line at the shoulder and reading as restraint rather than statement. Either way the length is enough to cross at the front and tuck, or to leave open down the coat.
Plain shades take a collar, a scarf or a tie beneath them without complication. The check designs — Black Watch, Thomson, DC Scott — carry more on their own and are better worn against a plain coat than layered into pattern.
