Knitwear is judged by how it sits after the first winter. Ours is knitted on a fine twelve-gauge frame in pure cashmere, with seams linked stitch by stitch by hand, and cut close without holding on.
Knitted close and finished slowly, a jumper keeps its shape at the cuff and its softness at the neck through years of wear rather than a single season. The weight is the point: warm enough to wear alone indoors, fine enough to sit under a jacket without breaking the shoulder line.
A linked seam joins two pieces of knit stitch for stitch, so the join has the same give as the fabric either side of it. It is slower than overlocking and it is the reason the shoulders hold their line after a year on a hanger. The cardigans are made with a fine placket so the front sits flat when it is left open.
Round-neck and V-neck jumpers, cardigans cut to the same close line, and a roll neck for the coldest weeks. The V opens the collarbone and takes a shirt beneath it; the round neck is the plainer of the two and the easier to layer. Colours run from the understated — grey, cream, charcoal, camel — to those that decide an outfit on their own, in red, pink and lilac. Add a cashmere scarf for another layer when the weather turns.
